The University of Lukanga (UNILUK) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 12. - 20.2., 2010The University of Lukanga (UNILUK) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo Prof. Dr. B. Pfeiffer and D. Grebe (president and vice-president of SUPPORT AFRICA) visited North-Kivu in the Congo January 12.- 20., 2010. The region was peaceful thought it was in the past disturbed by a civil war. The university had invited SUPPORT AFRICA in order to get first hand information on the situation and needs of the university. As a result, UNILUK and SUPPORT AFRICA have signed a co-operation agreement which will eventually lead to the support of development projects.
“We were strongly impressed by the warm reception received by the path finder formation that greeted us at our arrival. There were friendliness, confidence and thankfulness in the opening addresses”, commented Mrs. Grebe upon her arrival back in Germany. In Kinshasa, the capital in the West of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is the residence of many universities, yet there is a lack of schools of higher learning in the East of the country.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is located in the centre of Africa, north and south of the Equator. The purpose of the visit of SUPPORT AFRICA to UNILUK was to discuss possible development projects. Medical and health projects had the priorities as well as agricultural. Agreement was reached in giving first support to the new clinic which was still under construction, a project that was promoted by voluntary work of the local population and donations from abroad. The clinic will eventually serve the population of the region of about 50.000 people. Eventually the clinic will have a capacity of 150 beds. For the medical equipment 150.000,00 Euros are still needed. The project should be complete by 2010/11.
SUPPORT AFRICA comes with this project one step closer to its aim in establishing a chain of university clinics all across sub-Saharan Africa. So far six clinics were supported in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Ghana. The rector of the Lukanga University, Prof. Dr. Paul K. Mithimbo, visited the campus of SUPPORT AFRICA July 5.- 7., 2010.
